Making Money Online as an Affiliate Marketer

The easiest way for any interested, prospective internet marketer, to make money online is to sell other people’s products and services.

When I say “the easiest”, I do not mean that you will not have to do any work. You still must plan your business, create a budget and do all the other sensible things that apply to any business. The easy part is that you will not have to deal with product delivery and after sales support.

This is a big thing given that most product owners spend a lot of time setting these aspects of their business up and dealing with them on a day to day basis.

The concept of selling others’ products for profit is known online as affiliate marketing. Many internet marketers earn a full-time income from home, marketing affiliate programs.

Most product or service owners create an affiliate program when they are launching their sales engine. They know how lucrative it can be to have others sell products for them. They can recruit a virtual army of workers online all pointing links back to their sales page.

Affiliates can earn commissions of as much as 75% of the product price. Owners are able to offer such a high per centage because unlike an offline business there are little overheads once the business has been setup.

When searching online for an affiliate program make sure that the commission is a hefty slice of the pie. I would not settle for less than 40-50%. If you are not satisfied with the commission you are being offered then move on. There will always be other affiliate marketing programs to be found in your target market.

Although all affiliate product owners will offer you a website to promote their wares, it is highly advisable that you set up your own website. Anyone serious about creating a lasting online business should have their own website even if they only sell affiliate products from this site.

Many affiliate businesses will not be around in a few years time, which is beyond your control. If you have your own website then you have ultimate control over whether your business will still be operating or not. If you spend all your time promoting the affiliate site then if it does go bust in a few years time you will have nothing to show for it.

Affiliate marketing programs can provide more freedom that you can dream of but initially you do need to put in some work to set up your automated process. Do not overlook this reality when getting started.

How To Start Making Money As An Affiliate

There are many different ways to start earning money as an affiliate, but in this article I’m going to outline a simple method that someone with no experience, and no money to spend, can use to start making affiliate commissions.

It revolves around blogging – creating free blogs that actively promote your affiliate programs.

Before you start creating your blog though, you need to decide what affiliate programs you are going to promote. I prefer either high-paying affiliate programs, or those that pay recurring commissions on an ongoing basis, like web hosting, for example. Alternatively, you could head to Clickbank, and pick one of thousands of information products to promote.

Whichever product you choose, you want a product that’s both in demand, and appears to have good conversions (so you’re not wasting your time), whether it’s a compelling sales page, or it’s simply a top quality product that you know sells well.

Now you’ve got a product, or multiple products if you so wish, that you are going to promote, you can start creating your blog. There are various free blog accounts available, but for now I would recommend going with Blogger as they are owned by Google, which can only benefit your Google search engine rankings.

Your blog should obviously relate to the products you are promoting, and you should post regularly with links to your affiliate product(s) at the end of each post. You could also place affiliate links in the side bar and header bar as well, although don’t overdo it as it may start to look like a spam blog, and will therefore run the risk of being deleted.

So, for example, if you were promoting web hosting companies on your blog, then you would want to post regularly on topics relating to web hosting. You could use other peoples’ articles, or better still, do some research and write your own content as this will avoid the duplicate content penalty, and you will do much better in the search engines.

After each post, you want to ‘ping’ your blog. This is basically just a way of notifying the blog search engines that you have updated your blog, so they can spider your site, and increase it’s exposure. You can do this quickly and easily using ping services like Pingomatic or Pingoat.

If you post regularly, and make sure you ping your blog after every post, then you should start to see decent levels of traffic coming to your site, therefore increasing the chances of people clicking on your affiliate links and making a purchase.

Blog and ping, as it’s known, is undoubtedly a great way of getting started in affiliate marketing, but once you’ve started to make a few sales using this method, you should start moving on to the next level.

Sticking with blogging, you could add an opt-in form to your blog and collect the names and email addresses of your visitors, so you can market to them again in the future via email and the use of an autoresponder. You could also add more blogs and different products to your armoury, increasing the likelihood of making additional affiliate sales, plus you could host these blogs on your own domain giving you greater flexibility, and reducing the chances of your blogs being deleted.

Following on from that, you could also take steps to increase the traffic to your blogs, rather than simply relying on blogging and pinging. Popular methods of traffic generation include writing articles and submitting them to article directories and ezine publishers, writing press releases, exchanging and buying links to help with your SEO, advertising on pay-per-click search engines, posting on forums (that allow sig files), and creating free viral reports that link to your blog(s).

There are of course more advanced ways to promote affiliate programs, but creating your own blog(s) is one of the simplest and quickest ways to start your affiliate marketing career.

Affiliate Internet Marketing Versus The Squeeze

A whole lot of people are feeling the squeeze. Everything from gas prices, utility bills (our local gas and electric hit us with a 70% increase), buying a home and other expenses are climbing through the roof while wages remain stagnant. The result is that even with two or more people in the household working, many families are living from check to check.

What about savings? In January, the U.S. Commerce Department reported the savings rate for all of 2006 was a negative 1 percent, the lowest since the Great Depression of the 1930′s. Martin Crusinger writing for the Associated Press said, “…not only did people spend all the money they earned but they also dipped into savings or increased borrowing to finance purchases.”

Since the job probably is not cutting it, you have to look at additional ways to make money. Affiliate internet marketing can fill the money void quite nicely.

Affiliate internet marketing is simply promoting someone else’s product and getting paid for it without the overhead, products to stock or customer service hassles. The affiliate programs are usually free to join and anyone can make a healthy living online not just the experienced internet marketers.

You can get paid monthly, which is the usual standard, quarterly, one tier or two. One tier means direct referral. The affiliate merchant does not allow you to hire others to promote the product. Any commission paid to you is thru your efforts only.

With two tier programs not only can you sign up people to help you, (known as building a downline), but you also get paid a percentage of their sales in addition to your direct referrals. Some affiliate programs offer 3 tier payment plans or more. The point is anything above one is more money in your pocket.

Just starting out? Think of a product or service that interest you first and then see if there is a hot market for it. Ebay and Froogle are good places for this kind of research or just type some keywords into whatever search engine you use and hit enter. Is there a market? The internet is the biggest marketplace in the world so the odds are the answer is yes.

Get your own website. This is critical. It allows you to promote multiple affiliate programs and sign people up to your mailing list. Send visitors to your website first and then to the main affiliate page.

If you already have an online business, add affiliate marketing to your portfolio. Write a review of the product on your website or blog. You can also place an advertisement on your site. Generally, text ads get better clickthroughs, however if one is not available then by all means use a banner. They may not have the appeal they use to but a good banner is still very effective.

Whether a newbie or experienced marketer, use ezine advertising. This is a very powerful way of getting your affiliate program in front of a targeted audience. Also check the forums. There is a niche on just about everything so it stands the reason people are gathered someplace talking about it. Do not go in attempting to make a sale right away, instead be an active participant and use your signature to advertise your product or service.

Nowadays most people are just trying to stay one step ahead of the next bill. Affiliate internet marketing can go along way to changing that. Spend your time and energy in not only making money but building an online business. That is the best way to protect you and your family against the squeeze.

Affiliate Programs – Do They Work?

When people get the idea of starting a home based business, one of the first things that comes to mind is joining an affiliate program. People seem to have this mistaken idea that because the different companies offering affiliate programs have so many different products to offer, it will be easy to sell those products from your website. The problem is that thousands, and even millions, of other people with access to the Internet, have the same idea, so the market is becoming saturated. Even if you do manage to find a product that sells well, you will have to sell a great many products in order to make any kind of decent income from these programs.

This is not intended to dissuade you from joining affiliate programs as a means to make some extra income, but it is not something that you can rely upon if you are attempting to replace a primary or secondary source of income. In order to make any kind of real money with these programs, you have to either join hundreds of them and be willing to invest a great deal of money into advertising your website, and thus your affiliate programs, or you need to find those that pay the most commissions. For example, some of the credit card processing companies like ClickBank offer $4 and up for every sale that goes through their network from one of their partners. Even with these higher paid affiliate programs, you have to be willing to do a great deal of advertising and promoting of your website in order to make any substantial income.

With affiliate programs, the key is in advertising and promoting, and the more you have to advertise and promote, the better your chances are that you will be successful with the venture. Those most likely to be successful with this type of home business are those who are not only familiar with advertising and promoting websites but selling as well.

That doesn’t mean that someone who does one or the other cannot be successful, but those who have the most experience in all aspects of this type of business will gain the most success. That means you should not only know about website advertising and promotion and have experience in sales, but you should also be equally familiar with the products within your affiliate program(s).

For example, don’t join an affiliate program for a company that sells political memoirs if you have no interest in politics. You have to enjoy what you are doing in order to do your best, and that means knowing and enjoying the products that you promote. None of this guarantees success with this type of business venture, but lacking these qualities assures ultimate failure unless you gain the knowledge and expertise along the way.

What Types Of Products Should You Be Promoting As An Affiliate?

As an affiliate marketer, your choice of affiliate programs is almost limitless, and it can, therefore, be very difficult deciding what products you should be promoting, in order to achieve maximum long-term profits.

So in the remainder of this article, I’m going to explore the different affiliate program models, and discuss which ones you should be focusing your efforts on.

The first and most basic type of affiliate program is one that simply pays you a one-off commission for every sale you make. So if you sold a $50 product that pays you 5% per sale, for example, then you would earn $2.50 for every sale that you make as an affiliate.

There’s nothing wrong with these types of programs at all, but as commissions are often relatively low (between 1% and 15% for most products) you need to make a lot of sales to make the big money. In addition you, or essentially your website(s), have to keep on working in order to generate repeat sales.

This is why I always think that if you want to target these types of affiliate programs, you should look for products that pay high percentages, like Clickbank for example, or the more expensive products that pay out larger commissions per sale. This is because, in my experience, it takes just as much effort to promote high-paying affiliate programs as it does low-paying affiliate programs, so you might as well be well-compensated for your efforts.

Another closely related type of affiliate program is one which pays per lead, rather than per sale. These programs can be very lucrative as it’s often easier to get visitors to fill out a form, than to actually buy a product. Although most pay per lead programs may only pay you a small amount per lead, it’s worth looking in to as some companies, particularly those in lucrative and competitive markets, often pay out generous commissions for every single lead you generate (although you will face stiff competition from other affiliates).

Okay so we’ve discussed the pay per sale and pay per lead affiliate models. Both have their merits, but let’s now discuss the two types of affiliate programs that, in my opinion, are the most financially rewarding.

The first of these is the recurring commission affiliate model. The products that adopt this model are generally those that require repeat payments in future months, such as web hosting, autoresponders, and membership sites.

These can be extremely rewarding because as an affiliate, for every customer that you attract, you will continually be rewarded in future months as additional payments are made, because you will receive a slice of that payment in commission.

Therefore, these types of affiliate programs can provide affiliates with a relatively stable long-term income, and require less effort than pay per sale programs where you have to continually get new sales in order to generate commissions. This is why I suggest that every affiliate should be actively promoting at least one product that offers recurring commissions, and in addition should focus on the highest quality products, so that each referral remains a customer for as long as possible.

The final type of affiliate program I wish to discuss is the revenue share model. This is where the big money is to be made in my experience. It’s essentially similar to the recurring commission model in that it pays you repeat commissions from the same referral, except that the commissions involved here are often considerably larger.

Examples of the types of products or programs that use this model include lucrative markets like forex and poker, where they will pay you a percentage of the entire commissions that each of your referrals generate. Over time these commissions can really add up, particularly if you can attract one or two big-hitters who can generate the big commissions.

So to sum up, in my experience, while you can make good profits promoting pay per sale or pay per lead programs, you should ensure that you are actively promoting at least one product that pays recurring commissions, and one revenue share product or program. These require just as much effort to promote, but will often generate far more profits in the long run.
